Glen Haven is a small historic lakeside settlement on the western side of Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula, within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Unlike nearby towns, Glen Haven is primarily a preserved historic site rather than a conventional residential community. Glen Haven developed around maritime trade, fishing, lumber, and the movement of supplies along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Its historic buildings include a general store, blacksmith shop, and other structures associated with the community’s working waterfront. The Glen Haven Historical Area preserves these buildings and interprets the lives of the people who worked there. The Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station nearby provides another connection to maritime history, illustrating the work of crews responsible for assisting vessels along the often challenging Great Lakes shoreline. Together, these preserved sites show how isolated coastal settlements depended on the lake for transportation and commerce.

The Glen Haven beach provides access to Lake Michigan, while the surrounding dunes and forests offer hiking and opportunities for exploring the national lakeshore. Sleeping Bear Point is nearby, with trails leading through dune landscapes toward the coast. The Maritime Museum at Glen Haven occupies the former Coast Guard station and contains exhibits related to Great Lakes rescue work.
